ABSTRACT
Hemorrhoidal disease is one of the oldest diseases, and different treatment modalities have been applied since ancient times. To date, excisional hemorrhoidectomy is still the first treatment option for the select patients with external or patients with symptomatic combined grade IIIIv external and internal hemorrhoidal disease patients whom conservative and office-based procedures failed or not tolerated. Although surgical excision is an effective method, it still carries the risk of serious complications such as bleeding, infection, anal stricture, and incontinence. Moreover, surgical excision is a painful procedure and has a relatively long recovery period. Some technological advances have provided more treatment options in the last two decades. These technological innovations address the fundamental problems of classical surgical treatment, such as bleeding and pain, and also aim to enhance the recovery period. This section will focus on the technology-based treatment of hemorrhoidal disease and summarize the indications, techniques, advantages, and disadvantages of these treatment modalities.
