ABSTRACT

Telemedicine refers to the practice of using technological advances in communication and information to deliver healthcare services to patients located far from their healthcare providers. Telemedicine is not a separate technology; rather, it is an integral component of a broader continuum of care. Telemed icine uses telecommunication technologies to facilitate the provision of a wide range of medical, di agnostic, and treatmentrelated services that physicians commonly provide. This involves performing diagnostic assessments, carefully observing a patient’s posttreatment recovery or therapy, and coordi nating access to specialists away from the patient’s location. Telemedicine is expected to improve these processes, thereby enhancing the standards and effectiveness of medical care. Teledentistry focuses on delivering dental treatment through dental informatics, technological advances in communication, electronic medical documentation, and imaging technologies. It has been used to improve access to specialized treatment and to provide oral health services to atrisk populations. It encompasses patient care and educational delivery through synchronous (live video) or asynchronous (store and forward) telecommunication technology, remote patient monitoring, and mobile health technologies. The poten tial advantages of teledentistry include improving access to dental care, lowering the cost of care, and mitigating disparities in oral health care. The successful use of teledentistry in periodontology, preven tive and pediatric dentistry, oral medicine, oral diagnosis, oral surgery, oral pathology, orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, and patient education has been reported in the literature. Teleperiodontics focuses on using digital technology for communication and enables the use of cuttingedge telecommu nication technologies. Teledentistry has facilitated communication between patients and periodontists, thereby enhancing the quality of periodontal healthcare. Teledentistry has been increasingly integrated into contemporary dentistry and is seen as a valuedriven practice. However, additional studies are necessary, particularly concerning available information technology, workforce training, effects on oral care services, and oral and dental health results. Although data from current teledentistry models have indicated enhanced oral health among some populations, further investigation of evidencebased data regarding the longterm deployment of teledentistry on a broader scale is necessary.
