ABSTRACT
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) refer to a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and associated structures, often leading to pain and functional limitations. Common symptoms include orofacial pain, restricted jaw movement, and joint sounds such as clicking, all of which can significantly reduce quality of life. TMDs arise from multiple etiological factors, including structural abnormalities, trauma, hormonal changes, and psychosocial influences. Current diagnostic and classification criteria for TMDs provide a comprehensive framework by incorporating diagnostic approaches, physical symptoms, and psychosocial dimensions. The classification of TMDs includes muscle disorders, joint dysfunctions, and inflammatory conditions, emphasizing the complex interplay between local and systemic factors. This chapter highlights the importance of understanding the multifaceted nature of TMDs for accurate diagnosis and effective management.
