ABSTRACT
Techniques in cataract surgery has been evolving rapidly from the past to the present as well as implantable intraocular lens (IOL) technology. Modern IOL technology, which uses small incisions for foldable lenses with different optical designs, has evolved from the days when rigid, non-foldable lenses were implanted in the eye through large incisions. Today, lenses with different designs are being produced and developed to treat presbyopia after cataract surgery. However, it’s important we take a comprehensive approach and evaluate the technology in the context of the expectations of our patients. Pre-operative assessment and accurate measurements will remain essential, even as high-tech lenses become more prevalent in the future. Cost-effectiveness, widespread availability, and reliability are essential for all new intraocular lenses (IOLs) and technologies.
