ABSTRACT
Stroke is a neurological impairment and a significant contributor to disability and mortality globally, classified into two categories: hemorrhagic and ischemic. Obstruction of cerebral arteries with an embolus or thrombus disrupts cerebral blood flow, and it is the basis of ischemic stroke, resulting in considerable functional and neurological deficits. Gut microbiota and dysbiosis contribute to the pathogenesis of some of the commonly known stroke risk factors, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, showing an indirect causative relationship between gut microbiota and stroke. As gut microbiota started gaining attention, it has been seen as a “new organ” that affects other organ systems. Since then, many animal and clinical studies have been conducted to show the relationship between dysbiosis and their relationship with systemic diseases. This chapter investigates the relationship between stroke and gut microbiota, the mechanisms of that interaction, and possible new stroke preventive therapies aiming at dysbiosis.
