ABSTRACT

The treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been an important and widespread health problem that has been challenging clinicians and scientists for years. Due to its high metabolic activity, the retina is one of the most susceptible organs to oxidative stress. Despite numerous scientific studies, the fact that its cause has not been fully elucidated to date makes treatment difficult. AMD is caused by accumulated oxidative stress, environmental factors, and metabolic waste products. The balance between theese factors that the development of AMD should be in favor of preventive factors. Large, multi-center, prospective studies such as AREDS1 and two have demonstrated the importance of diet and especially micronutrition. Vitamins C and E and minerals such as zinc and copper in the AREDS formulation, and lutein and zeaxanthin from carotenoids and omega-3 have been shown to reduce the risk of AMD progressionResveratrol has been added to various products as subsequent studies have supported its beneficial effects. In addition to the micronutrition formula, consumption of antioxidant and omega-3-rich nutrients can also be effective in preventing AMD.
